Prizes:

First Place $250

Second Place $150

Third Place $100

Awarded to singers from the 4th and 5th Year Treble and TBB Categories (CL7B and CL8B) who include an art song composed by a woman of color in their Texoma Classical National Student Audition repertoire selections.

Process:

1) Singers must be registered to sing by their teacher for the Texoma Classical NSA Auditions

2) Teachers in CL7B and CL8B will be contacted after the registration date to submit an additional short form to confirm if an art song composed by a woman of color is part of their audition package and they will be asked to identify the piece.

3) Singers in CL7B and CL8B do not have to sing the diverse selection in either prelims or semifinals, but it must be on their prelim list from which they perform at the current year conference.

4) CL7B and CL8B singers who make the finals and have a piece that meets the criteria for this special award will be invited to sing on the Barbara Hill Moore finals, as well, which will occur during the afternoon finals. (CL7B and CL8B finals occur in the evening).

5) Singers in CL7B and CL8B do not have to participate in this award, this is an additional bonus, much like the Liederkranz award for singers in CL9 and CL10.

6) If you have questions regarding the eligibility of music by a particular composer, please contact James Rodriguez at James.Rodriguez@tcu.edu

From the award’s founder, James Rodriguez:

“In recent years, the importance of diversifying repertoire in the classical canon has made great headway. It is important that we continue this movement, even when forces outside of the arts are trying to dismantle the progress of DEI. Much of my research has been done on diverse repertoire and pedagogy to substantiate its importance in the applied studio. This award is created to highlight and reward those students and teachers who are being conscious about the repertoire they select, study, and perform. It is my hope that it will incentivize TEXOMA NATS to be a leader of the greater voice community in furthering this endeavor. When thinking of who this award should honor, my immediate thoughts went to someone who has been an incredible mentor to me since I was an undergraduate student at SMU. A person who has been a leader in advocating for diversity not only in repertoire but also in the make-up of our vocal student community. That person is known to many of us as “Prof”, but you all know her as Barbara Hill Moore.”

The Grady Harlan Award

Dr. H. Grady Harlan, head of the Music Department of Howard Payne College, was the third Region Governor (1948-1952) of Texoma.  In 1951, Dr. Harlan established the Region’s annual student auditions.  We honor him and his contribution to our region by offering this award in his name.

This award is presented to the first-place winner of 4th/5th Year Treble (7B), 4th/5th Year TBB (8B), Advanced Treble (9), or Advanced TBB (10) who, in the opinion of the judges, has the most promising professional voice. The Grady Harlan Award winner receives $250 and a special certificate. The award winner also leads the singing of Auld Lang Syne at the conclusion of the finals on Saturday evening.
